P-visa for athletes, artists and entertainers

The P visa is suitable for athletes, artists and entertainers who wish to carry out their activities in the USA, for example during a performance or as part of a competition or exhibition. The visa can be issued for individuals or groups.

The P visa is also suitable if the applicant wishes to receive a certain amount of remuneration in addition to any prize money. The P visa is issued for a period of one to a maximum of 5 years.

The P visa is divided into the groups P-1, P-2 and P-3. The P-1 category includes, for example, professional athletes or artists as individuals or groups. The P-2 visa covers these persons if entry is planned as part of an exchange program. Category P-3 is relevant for so-called “culturally unique services”. These are services that are of particular importance to a specific nationality, ethnicity, religion or other identifiable group. This includes not only appearances or performances, but also training or teaching.

Important accompanying persons (so-called “essential support”) can also apply for a P1, P2 or P3 visa. Family members can apply for a P4 visa, but this does not give them a work permit.

A letter of recommendation from a US trade union or peer group is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a visa. However, the USCIS immigration authority is not ultimately bound by this. In addition, the applicant must maintain a place of residence outside the USA and be able to prove this.
