Naturalization

After receiving a green card, it may be possible to apply for US citizenship. It is also possible for persons born outside the USA whose parents are US citizens and spouses or children of US military personnel to obtain US citizenship.

The advantage of US citizenship over simply holding a green card is that only US citizens are eligible to vote in presidential elections. In some states, only US citizens can vote in local elections. In addition, green card holders cannot hold public office and must regularly renew their residence documents for a fee.

Green card holders can generally apply for US citizenship after a period of 5 years. People who are married to a US citizen can apply after 3 years. Some basic requirements must also be met. Within the five-year period mentioned above, the applicant must have resided in the USA for at least 30 months (for a period of three years: 18 months). Proof of permanent residence in the USA must be provided, the applicant must be at least 18 years old and speak fluent English. In addition, they must respect the US Constitution, be free of criminal convictions and be prepared to take the Oath of Allegiance.

The applicant is invited to a naturalization interview and must pass a naturalization test. If the tests are passed, the applicant will be invited to a naturalization ceremony.

We will be happy to inform you about the costs involved and the required documents in a personal consultation.
