J-visa for participants in exchange programs and interns

The J1 visa can be applied for to carry out an internship, research work or certain exchange programs in the USA, for example in the case of a high school, au pair or work & travel stay.

The J1 visa is subdivided into the internship and trainee subcategories: Internal refers to a study-related internship abroad lasting up to 12 months, while trainee refers to a work-related internship lasting up to 18 months.

There are a total of 15 different J1 visa categories, each of which has different individual requirements. Please note in particular that J1 visas can only be applied for with a so-called J-1 visa sponsor, which is usually the exchange organization.

Please contact us if a J1 visa is an option for you. We will be happy to carry out an individual assessment of the type of visa and the requirements to be met. In consultation with our clients, we are happy to arrange the necessary steps in each case. As part of the application process, the applicant is usually required to appear in person at the relevant US consulate.

Furthermore, family members, i.e. spouses or unmarried children under the age of 21, can apply for a J-2 visa, which allows them to stay in the USA for the same period of time as the J1 applicant.
