M-visa for trainees/students at non-academic training institutions
The M1 visa is suitable for people who wish to undertake non-academic vocational training in the USA. The M1 visa is not suitable for attending a language course; in this case, an F visa can be considered.
In order for a visa to be issued, the educational institution at which the vocational training is to be carried out must first have a SEVIS registration (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) and thus be listed in a corresponding online database. If such a registration is available, the educational institution can issue the required I-20 form, which must be presented to the US consulate when submitting the application.
In addition, it is assumed that the financing of the training is secured and that the applicant’s intention to return to their country of origin can be proven, for example by a continued residence and other evidence.
In the course of the application process, the applicant must regularly appear in person at the US consulate. Due to the usually long processing times, it is advisable to apply for a visa as early as possible, at the earliest one year before the planned stay.
Family members such as spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 can apply for an M2 visa to accompany the applicant during their stay
