I-visa for journalists and media representatives

The I visa (also known as a “journalist visa”) is suitable for people working in the media/press or broadcasting sector – for example, journalists, reporters and similar professions.

Applicants for the I visa must submit a visa application if they wish to pursue their profession within the USA – regardless of the duration of their stay. Journalistic work may not be carried out without the I visa; a visitor visa or mere ESTA authorization is not sufficient. As long as the requirements for the visa are met, the visa can be issued for an unlimited period of time.

In contrast to many other visas, it is not necessary to prove that you are still resident in your home country, although the I visa is also a so-called non-immigrant visa.

The prerequisite for the issue of an I visa is that the applicant is professionally active in the media sector and is traveling to the USA to carry out this professional activity. The applicant must be employed by or work for a non-US media company (e.g. as a freelancer). An employment contract and/or a secondment letter from the employer may be required. In addition, the applicant must also be in possession of a press card.
