B visa for visitors

The B visa for visitors (Temporary Visitor for Business & Pleasure) is divided into the following subcategories:

  • Business trips/ B1 visa
  • Vacation trips/ B2 visa

One of the B visas is required if a business or vacation trip to the USA is planned for a duration of more than 90 days. For trips lasting up to 90 days, only an ESTA authorization is required. The B visa is the most common visa category applied for at US consulates.

The B1 visa can be applied for, for example, to attend a conference, trade fair or meeting. The B2 visa covers not only pure vacation stays, but also, for example, visits to relatives or trips for medical purposes.

In order to be granted a B visa, the applicant must not receive any money from a US source of income and must be able to provide proof of permanent residence outside the USA. In addition, the applicant must also prove that they have sufficient financial resources. When entering the country, it must be ensured that the entry is only for a predetermined, temporary period – the return journey to the country of origin must therefore be guaranteed. In the case of the B2 visa, clear and comprehensible travel plans or activities in the USA must be demonstrated. Both B visas are accompanied by an interview appointment at a US embassy or consulate.

The B visa can be issued for a period of up to 10 years. As a rule, however, it is limited to a duration of six months or 180 days.

In an individual consultation, our lawyers can advise you on all open questions relating to the B visa and determine together whether the B visa is suitable for you. We will be happy to assist you with the application and submission of the necessary documents.

The application fees always vary and depend on how many application steps are required and how many US authorities need to be involved in each individual case. When applying at a US consulate or embassy, the consular application fee and any additional consular fees and costs for passport delivery must be paid.
